MEMORIALS

     What is a memorial?

A memorial book is a work donated to the Library to perpetuate the memory of a relative, friend  or acquaintance.

When is it appropriate to give a memorial book?

Any time one wishes to express sympathy and regret over the demise of a friend or loved one.

     Who gives memorial books?

Individuals, clubs, business and professional organizations all utilize the memorial book tribute.

How much does a memorial book cost?

A book in any price range the donor wishes is acceptable.

     Who selects the memorial books?

The Library maintains a limited stock of books appropriate for memorials from which the donor     may select a memorial. However, books from other sources are acceptable as long as they meet the Library's acquisition standards.  A sum of money may also be donated, leaving the actual selection up to the Library staff.

What type of book is considered a suitable memorial book?

Many people select a book which reflects the special interest of the person for whom it is given. However, this is not strictly necessary. Any  book which represents a needed or desired addition to the Library collection is suitable.

What distinguishes a memorial book on the shelf from other books in the Library collection?

A memorial plate with the person's name for whom the book is given is placed in each memorial book. A record of all memorial books, listing donor and person for whom the book is given, is kept in the library. The record is to be found in the volume entitled "In remembrance" and is on display on a shelf across from the Circulation Desk in the Main Library.

A similar record is maintained at the Ashford Brand Library and the Columbia Branch Library and a donor may specify that his gift be sent to either branch.

How is the family of the deceased notified of the gift to the Library?

The Library sends an engraved card to those people specified by the donor notifying them of the gift and the donor.

How does one make arrangements for selecting a memorial book?

One visit or phone call to the Library is generally sufficient to complete all arrangements.

Can other items besides books be given?

Videocassettes, compact disks, books on tape, art prints  may also be used as memorials.

Can books be given in honor of a living person?

Books may also be given in appreciation of living persons.
